How to Mount your Starlink Mini on a Roof Rack - Permanent vs Magnetic: Which Option Is Right for You?

How to Mount your Starlink Mini on a Roof Rack - Permanent vs Magnetic: Which Option Is Right for You?

If you've got a Starlink Mini and you're trying to figure out the best way to mount it on your 4WD, caravan, van or touring rig, you've got two options with our mount. The right one depends on how you use your vehicle.

Both options use the same Australian-designed, aluminium-built SVNTY OFFROAD Starlink Mini Mount. The difference is how it attaches to your roof rack or vehicle: bolt it down with rack-specific hardware, or add Magnetic Feet for Starlink Mini Mount for quick removal.

Option 1: Permanent roof rack mount

The standard configuration bolts the mount to your roof rack crossbars using optional hardware matched to your rack. This suits a single-vehicle touring setup where the dish normally stays in place.

Compatible rack systems

  • Rhino-Rack Pioneer Platform
  • Yakima LockNLoad
  • Rola Titan
  • Front Runner
  • ARB BASE Rack, with the appropriate bridging brackets

Check your rack model and hardware requirements before ordering. If you're running a different rack, get in touch so we can help work through the fitment.

Security bolts

The Anti-Theft M6 Stainless Steel Bolt Kit replaces standard mount hardware with tamper-resistant fasteners. It helps deter opportunistic theft, but isn't a guarantee against theft. Keep the supplied security driver somewhere accessible for removal.

The trade-off: removal

Permanent mounting is a set-and-forget option, but removal takes more work than the magnetic setup. You need to undo the side plate bolts and remove the Starlink Mini from its cradle to access the rack attachment hardware. Allow time and have the appropriate tools ready; security bolts also require their matching driver.

For a touring vehicle where the dish stays installed, this may be a sensible trade-off. If you regularly move the dish or pack it away when parked, magnetic feet offer more flexibility.

Option 2: Magnetic feet with steel base plates

How it works

Fit the set of four magnetic feet to your mount. On an aluminium rack, bolt suitable steel base plates, such as our Universal Roof Rack Quick Release Adapter Plates, to the rack during the initial installation. The feet then attach magnetically to those steel contact surfaces.

To remove the assembly, disconnect power and carefully release the magnetic feet from the plates. The mount and dish can come away together without undoing the permanent rack hardware each time. Keep fingers clear of the contact surfaces and follow the installation instructions.

Why aluminium racks need steel base plates

Magnets do not grip aluminium. Many modern roof platforms, including Rhino-Rack Pioneer and Yakima LockNLoad systems, therefore need suitable steel contact plates. On a suitable ferrous steel surface, the feet may attach directly, but check the actual material, surface condition and fitment rather than assuming every metal roof or rack is suitable.

Benefits of going magnetic

  • Removal when parked: take the assembly off and store it out of sight rather than leaving it on the roof.
  • Multi-vehicle use: move the assembly between vehicles with suitable steel surfaces or correctly installed base plates. Check fitment on each vehicle.
  • Portable use: useful for compatible setups on caravans, vans, canopies, boats and equipment, subject to the mounting surface and installation requirements.
  • Repeatable positioning: fixed base plates provide a consistent mounting position.
  • Repositioning at camp: a removable assembly gives you more placement options when parked, provided the new position is secure and the cable reaches safely.

Magnetic retention is not an anti-theft lock. Follow the product instructions and check the installation before travel.

Permanent mount vs magnetic feet: side by side

Choosing a mounting method for your Starlink Mini
Consideration Permanent mount Magnetic feet and base plates
Installation Mount bolts to rack platforms with appropriate rack-specific hardware. Steel base plates bolt to the rack once; magnetic feet attach the mount to the plates.
Removal Requires tools and removal of the dish from the cradle to access rack fixings. Disconnect power and release the assembly from the plates, without undoing rack bolts each time.
Security Optional tamper-resistant security bolts help deter theft. Removable for storage when parked; magnets are not a theft-prevention lock.
Cost No magnetic feet or magnetic base plates required. Additional cost for magnetic feet and suitable steel plates where needed.
Multi-vehicle use Less convenient because tools are required to transfer the assembly. Easier to transfer between compatible, prepared mounting surfaces.
Best suited to One vehicle where the dish normally stays installed. Frequent removal, portable use or multiple compatible vehicles.
Rack compatibility Compatible aluminium or steel racks with appropriate hardware. Suitable ferrous steel contact surfaces, or steel base plates on aluminium racks.

The short version: choose permanent mounting for a straightforward single-vehicle setup. Choose magnetic feet if quick removal, storage or moving between compatible vehicles matters more to you.

Will crossbars or roof rack gear obstruct the signal?

When choosing a position, check more than whether the mount fits. Crossbars, raised rack edges, rooftop tents, solar panels and loaded cargo may sit in the dish's view of the sky. A rack-compatible mount does not establish that a particular placement is obstruction-free.

Before fixing the final position, use Check for Obstructions in the Starlink app. Hold your phone as close as safely possible to the proposed dish height and perspective, and scan with the rack loaded as you intend to use it. Repeat the check if you move the dish or change the roof load. Do not assume a crossbar above the dish is harmless simply because it looks narrow.

Starlink needs a clear view of the sky; objects blocking that view may cause service interruptions. We cannot promise that any particular crossbar spacing, under-rack position or mounting method will have no effect on performance. Magnetic feet make repositioning more convenient when parked, but do not themselves improve reception or remove obstructions. See Starlink's obstruction-check guidance.

What both options have in common: the mount itself

EVA foam cradle

The Mini sits in a precision-cut high-density EVA foam cradle rather than directly on a bare metal plate. The cradle is designed to cushion the dish against vibration and impact.

Protective lid

The mount includes a 3mm white protective acrylic cover. Additional white, clear and black covers are available. Our existing guide recommends white for Australian heat and describes our self-conducted Glasshouse Mountains test: around 43–46°C white-lid surface temperatures versus around 62°C for black over a two-hour test in approximately 30°C ambient conditions, with no overheating warnings recorded during that test. Those observations are specific to the test conditions, not a guarantee for every installation. The mount product pages provide access to the heat test report.

Aluminium construction

Our mounts are designed and manufactured in Brisbane from aluminium for a lightweight, corrosion-resistant installation. Compare the Black Starlink Mini Roof Rack Mount and White Starlink Mini Roof Rack Mount, or configure your setup.

Power choices for either mounting method

Mounting method and power setup are separate choices. Choose a standard bracket with no integrated power connection, an Anderson connector version, or a 12V-to-30V step-up booster setup with an Anderson or Deutsch connector to suit your vehicle.

The Black Starlink Mini Mount with Anderson Connector and 12 Volt Booster combines the mount with integrated power hardware. Separate Anderson booster and Deutsch booster options are also available.

Choose the power supply, cable and connectors to meet the Mini's requirements and your installation instructions. A booster is a power-conversion accessory, not an antenna or a remedy for a blocked sky view. We do not claim that it increases satellite signal strength. If considering USB-C power, check the required supply and cable specifications rather than assuming any USB-C outlet will work.

An accessible connector also makes disconnecting power simpler when removing a magnetic assembly. Route and secure cables so they are protected from sharp rack edges, moving panels and snagging.

Configure the mount to your setup

  • Bracket colour: black or white; contact us about custom colours.
  • Power: standard bracket, Anderson connector, Anderson with step-up booster, or Deutsch with step-up booster.
  • Mounting: direct rack mounting with suitable hardware, or magnetic feet with suitable steel contact surfaces.
  • Cover: white supplied as standard; additional cover colours available separately.
  • Security: optional anti-theft bolt kit.
  • Rack fitment: select the correct hardware for your rack; ARB BASE Rack installations need bridging brackets.

Comparing other mounting options

When comparing mounts, look beyond price. Check how the dish is held, whether there is cushioning between it and the mounting structure, what protective cover is included, the construction materials, available power configurations and rack-specific hardware. Look for clear installation information and documented testing rather than assuming that similar-looking mounts perform the same way.

Our mount brings together an EVA foam cradle, aluminium construction, a protective lid and a choice of power and mounting configurations. Our heat testing is self-conducted, not independent laboratory certification; read the methodology and results linked on the mount product pages when deciding what suits your setup.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need steel base plates if I have a steel roof rack?

Not necessarily. The magnetic feet may attach directly to a suitable ferrous steel surface. Aluminium racks require suitable steel contact plates. If unsure, ask us about your rack and proposed position.

Can I use magnetic feet without a roof rack?

Potentially, on a suitable ferrous steel roof, canopy or other mounting surface. Check suitability and installation requirements first. Non-steel surfaces need an appropriate securely installed steel interface; do not assume every surface is suitable.

How strong are the magnets?

The feet are designed for a firm hold and removable installation. They are rubber-lined, but keep contact surfaces clean and follow the product instructions. Keep fingers clear when bringing the feet onto steel plates. Magnetic holding force does not replace installation checks or provide an anti-theft lock.

Will the white lid cause overheating?

No overheating warnings were recorded in the two-hour test described above. That does not rule out overheating under different conditions. We recommend white for heat management; review the heat report linked on the mount product pages.

Does the mount work with the Starlink Standard dish?

The mount range discussed here is designed for Starlink Mini, not the Standard dish.

Can I add security bolts later?

Yes. The Anti-Theft M6 Bolt Kit is a replacement-hardware upgrade for SVNTY OFFROAD Starlink mounts. Keep its matching security driver and follow the installation instructions.

Not sure which configuration suits you?

Contact SVNTY OFFROAD with your rack model, vehicle and intended use. We can help you work through mounting hardware, removal needs and power options before you order.
